There are many methods out there to help us figure them out. <strong>But the question is: do we empathize with them the way we should?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4171 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s first agree on the definition of a persona: it is a composite sketch of a key segment of your audience. Personas help shaping the content and features of a product, making it more relevant and useful to your audience.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no right way to develop a persona: many tools are available to guide you through this process. However, one thing is certain: when you study their different profiles thoroughly, <\/span><b>it becomes harder to figure it out how to fit new features into their needs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without having to neglect one or two of them. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding better<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s see an example: A businesswoman owns a chain of gyms in your town. She would like to raise subscriptions by investing in an app that would offer features to help her clients lose weight, control their diets and track their results. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piece of cake until then, right? Although, when researching the chain\u2019s target audience, you find out that there are <\/span><b>three persona profiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. People that subscribe to lose weight and usually give up in a couple of months.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. People that have the willingness to go to the gym three times a week, but are usually careless about controlling their diets. They really like to capture their progress when running and posting online.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. People that care about their health in first place, moderating the amount of food they eat and exercising as much as they can. They take it very seriously.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing that, you have reached a point where you can propose some features, such as &nbsp;tracking how many kilometers one has run, offering a way to count calories of the food they\u2019ve ingested along the day and maybe even storing photos of their progress. Nice!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then, here comes the issue: <strong>how do you prioritize features in the home screen app?<\/strong> Which ones will be highlighted? Which ones will be secondary?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4172 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/giphy-1.gif\" alt=\"giphy (1)\" width=\"214\" height=\"175\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can choose the one you think is the most interesting, or maybe <b>interview users to gather data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and come to a decision, but those options don\u2019t evenly represent the personas defined at first. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that, I would like to introduce a method that is often used in many design areas but not widely known in web app designing. This method was developed by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julio Teixeira, Giuliano Benedet and Anna Hope<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it is a <\/span><b>step-by-step guide to transform informational research and personas in design requirements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can access their original research (in Portuguese) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stat.elogo.incubadora.ufsc.br\/index.php\/eRevistaLOGO\/article\/view\/3705\/4386\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Follow the step-by-step<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Data analysis<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First step is to gather data \u2013 which you&#8217;re probably aware of. When you get to the point where you have tons of data (results from interviews, tests and other methods) and no clue on how to define its relevance, it\u2019s time to organize it. You can use mind maps and mood boards to make all data clearer. That way it will be<\/span><b> easier to establish a hierarchy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between concepts and <\/span><b>create more accurate personas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Define their personal and professional interests and consumer habits.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/media\/Diagrams\/mindmap.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"257\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Awesome mind map example of time management.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/danielreeve.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/1.Mood-Board-Full-960x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"241\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colors, pictures and everything you need can be turned into a mood board.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2. Define your personas\u2019 profile weight according to their affinity with your product<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nIn this step you will <\/span><b>define the weight your personas have<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in accordance with their degree of affinity with your app. It\u2019s important to bear in mind their interests and what the odds are that they will use your app. The stronger these characteristics are presented, the more weight they will have.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4173\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4173 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Untitled-1.png\" alt=\"Personas Weight\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Persona in green, for instance, has the most importance in the graphic, since her chances to engage with the app are higher (viability) and her interest is placed in a medium to high quadrant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Determine the concepts&#8217; weight<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After doing all that, you need to calculate the weight of the features you gathered. Describe in a matrix the weight of each persona against the affinity or the importance they would give to each functionality.<\/span><b> The features gain more weight according to the persona relevance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that the chances of success will be higher.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nTo do so, you have to insert in the matrix a grade each persona would give a specific feature. Let\u2019s say that \u201cD\u201d represents a clean interface, with neutral colors in it. Persona in green -that may be categorized as a technology enthusiast &#8211; would grade that interface as 6, in a 1 to 6 scale. The persona in blue thinks it would be nice to interact with a colorful interface, so he gives that interface a score 4.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4188 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/personas2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/personas2.png 800w, https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/personas2-768x288.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step is to insert the weight you calculated previously. Evaluation in different stages of the project<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, having the insight about how much each persona\/feature is relevant to your project, you are able to apply these measurements to different stages of your project, such as: wireframes, deciding &nbsp;icons styles, prioritizing features and so on. Indeed they are crucial at that stage, but also <\/span><b>very important to serve as a base to every decision we make throughout the product development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
