I had been considered once an overly-meticulous designer, always checking thoroughly if the developer was implementing the project with a high fidelity to the delivered mockups. Until then, I thought this was enough to be a good professional\u2013after all, Design should be all about visuals <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This line of thought, established by previously working at companies where accepting crazy estimates was part of the job and the main goal was to please clients (the ones who were paying) made me forget what Design is really about: methodologies, tests and process. Following the latter vision makes you leave aside personal taste, opinions and assumptions to focus on metrics and the real client: the end user. Not always what we believe is the most pleasant look leads to the best results, and that starts to make sense when you have a logical explanation powered by metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3938 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Iceberg.png\" alt=\"Iceberg\" width=\"1360\" height=\"1558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Iceberg.png 1360w, https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Iceberg-768x880.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1360px) 100vw, 1360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, especially when dealing with the digital area, it\u2019s likely that Design gets reduced to mockups creation, as if it were the only valuable deliverable, discarding crucial stages as immersion, research and validation. In many cases, during the course of a project, it won\u2019t always be possible to go through all of those as we&#8217;d like to, due to time constraints. On the other hand, understanding this general panorama and applying it indeed is what will turn abstract visual conception into objective, once there is foundation and reasons for what is being built.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booking.com: Design with brains<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This relationship between aesthetics and results may easily become a long discussion. In this case, a product that I commonly use to make a point is Booking.com. At a first glance, one wouldn&#8217;t see it as a nice example of research by visual references\u2013but that analysis is shallow and hugely mistaken. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I say that based on the knowledge that Booking has a highly-capable <a href=\"https:\/\/cheesecakelabs.com\/blog\/blog\/building-app-phase-2-product-design\/\">Design team<\/a>, dedicated to thinking, testing and measuring each detail of their product. Any change, before it even exists, needs to reach previously specified targets and go through <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.design\/5-ways-to-listen-to-your-customers-8d06b67702a6#.qtxerou2t\">many validations with users<\/a>, which makes them specialists on the subject. As much as\u2013in my opinion\u2013this website isn\u2019t the best example of fine aesthetics, it\u2019s correct to conclude that it is one of the best in what it proposes to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3943\" src=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Booking.com_1.png\" alt=\"Booking.com\" width=\"1742\" height=\"1162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Booking.com_1.png 1742w, https:\/\/ckl-website-static.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Booking.com_1-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1742px) 100vw, 1742px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We must learn from Booking.com&#8217;s team that it is paramount to understand all user requirements\u2013and they shouldn&#8217;t be limited to beautiful screens. To create something based upon assumptions about reality can result in a very high expense, besides causing frustration and fatigue. Being empathetic and getting to know the public, seeing their pain and aspirations, studying, testing, and constantly validating the best options to supply what they desire are a few of the fundamental items to achieve meaningful and satisfying results.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth keeping in mind that I&#8217;m not taking for granted the value of a good-looking product. What I am pointing out is that good looks\u2013alone\u2013don&#8217;t win any game. It would be the same as opening a grocery store and only investing in hiring the best architects, before getting to know the area, the consumers, without thinking about the parking lot as well as in the team that will to serve clients\u2013it might work, but it&#8217;s definitely not the best strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking About Numbers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve sorted some data (source: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.invisionapp.com\/statistics-on-user-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that reinforce how important it is to have a holistic view when it comes to Design: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN.com revenues jumped 35% after they listened to their community and incorporated suggestions into their homepage redesign<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing a specific blue over some other hues amounted to an additional $80 million in annual revenue for Bing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First impressions are 94% design-related<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram\u2019s new CTA button led to a in 45% increase in advertisement performance (source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/business\/news\/instagram-call-to-action\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrapping up<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking about Design involves much more than producing beautiful mockups. It&#8217;s paramount to understand the impact a choice for visual appealing interfaces\u2013but badly thought out\u2013may cause to your product in the long run.
