A Unique Approach to CBDCs with Real Digital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind, Brazil has taken a different approach to its CBDC. In contrast to other CBDCs, Brazil’s Real Digital was initially designed for something other than retail payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is because Brazil already has an established and popular digital payment system called Pix<\/a>, which successfully handles daily transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pix went live in November 2020 and has been very successful with the Brazilian public. In its first year, the instant payment system saw more than 330 million individual keys<\/a> in operation and acted as the first-ever digital money transfer for 45 million people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This enthusiastic embrace of a digital payment system encouraged the development of a CBDC for Brazil. While Real Digital is expected to be integrated into Brazil\u2019s existing digital payment systems, the Central Bank of Brazil also plans to focus on several different use cases in addition to daily transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00e1bio Araujo<\/a>, an economist at the Central Bank of Brazil coordinating the Real Digital initiative, hopes that Real Digital will \u201cprovide entrepreneurs with a safe and reliable environment to innovate through the use of programmability technologies, such as programable money and smart contracts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
